Phoenix Mountain Scenic Area

October 23, 2005

We are planning to visit Bao'An's Phoenix Mountain Scenic Area this Sunday.  Here are some "teasers."

WenChang Tower

Located on the plain below Phoenix Mountain, this tower is dedicated to Wen Tianxiang (文天祥, June 6, 1236-January 9, 1283), the last Prime Minister of the Southern Song Dynasty, who was executed by his captor Kublai Khan.  Thi figures inside include Bei Di, god of the North; Wen Chang, god of culture (representing Wen Tianxiang himself); and Guan Di, god of war and wealth.

Feng Huang Shan Miao (Phoenix Mountain Temple):

The Main Hall

The temple on Phoenix Mountain dates back to the Yuan Period (1206–1368).  In addition to the Main Hall, the Grotto area and the mountain top provide a variety of experiences for the visitor.

The front of the temple, and the front door

The temple is currently undergoing expansion; two halls are being added, one on either side.  This does allow, however, for photos of "history in the making," as when this workman applies paint to the roof ornamentation.

Inside

Despite the construction outside, the interior is serene.  The Big Guy greets us; Guan Yin occupies the main altar; and a side hall is filled with images of motherhood.

The Grotto Area

The grottoes on the hillside are particularly attractive.  One imagines that they may have pre-dated the temple itself.

The Mountain Top

Hiking trails lead up the mountain behind the temple.  There are views in several directions.

The Restaurant

We will have a vegetarian meal in the temple's restaurant.

Long Wang Miao (Dragon King Temple)

Near Phoenix Mountain is this temple, which honors the Dragon King.  In his various directional guises (North, South, West, and especially East) he features in numerous Chinese folk stories.

This temple is small but extremely ornate.  A turtle pond is out front; the Dragon King occupies the main altar; and a side altar is dedicated to Guan Yin.  James will tell a few stories about the relationship between Guan Yin and the Dragon King when we arrive.

Just a small sample of the roof ornamentation.

We hope you'll join us next Sunday!
