Sungang Walk

November 12, 2005

We will take a walk in Luohu next Saturday morning at 9 a.m.  Starting at Da Ju Yuan Station, at the top of Exit B, we will walk to the "One Day in Shenzhen" sculpture assemblage.  After a short bus ride, we will visit People's Park, Hong Hu Park, and finally The Site of the Merits.  Read more below. More information on the fee, etc., is here.

One Day in Shenzhen

Just across from the Shenzhen Library, and north of Litchi Park, is the "One Day in Shenzhen" collection of statues.  These are statues of 18 everyday Shenzheners; along with the bull in front of City Hall they are considered to be "the most important artistic milestones in the city's history."  You may see lots of photos here.  We will have translations of the "story" of each person represented, and hang around awhile to learn about each.

People's Park

People's Park opened in 1983.  Given its urban location it is a remarkably tranquil place, filled with birdsong and fishing spots.  Lots of twisty lanes, bridges, and pavilions for that perfect Chinese feeling.

Hong Hu Park

Hong Hu Park dates back to 1984.  Its numerous islands and natural environment make it an ideal bird habitat.  The bridges and pavilions are exquisite, on a scale larger than those in People's Park.

The Site of the Merits

The "Site" itself is a walled compound said to date back to the early Ming Dynasty.  One small temple remains active within the walls.

Outside of the walls is this large temple dedicated to Tian Hou, goddess of the sea.  It seems to be part of the recently-completed recreation plaza in front of the compound.

We hope you'll join us next Saturday!
