Welcome to the "Survival Kit" for Shenzhen Expats!

This page features views by local expats and internet resources targeted at expats in Shenzhen and nearby areas.

Each heading below offers links to off-site resources or entries in the LIFESiZE blog.  More Shenzhen information can be found by checking the LIFESiZE Homepage.  If you are a regular visitor to LIFESiZE, your best bet is just to check the blog occasionally.

Blogs: China has more blogs than you can shake a stick at.  There is a long list of them at Sinosplice, which can be sorted by the name of the site or by the location of the writer.  This list is limited to Shenzhen (and a few notable near-Shenzhen) blogs; the quoted descriptions are from the Sinosplice listing:

  • The Laughing Buddha: This blog contains occasional updates on the activities of my Laughing Buddha endeavor.  It also incorporate the LIFESiZE blog associated with these expat resource pages, and my ramblings about life in Shenzhen, a "Special Zone" in many ways...   (Revised January 5, 2006)

  • Shenzhen Zen (in China): "An American's expat experiences."  The description leaves much to be desired.  It's funny.  Damned funny.  I met Justin through this blog before I came here, making him my oldest friend in Shenzhen.  Now resident in Hong Kong, his weekly returns to "the Lucky Number" make this a must-read for Shenzheners.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • ShenzhenRen: "An American expat's combination of observations on China, snarky political comments, and a long postcard home to the kids."  Written by our friend Sam, this one comes highly recommended.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Half a World Away (in China): E-pal Patrick's blog on music and life in Shenzhen, with the added perspective of a student of Chinese language.  Always entertaining. (Posted January 5, 200645)

  • ZHAOPIAN MEITIAN Our friend Jesse's Xanga site, this daily photo blog has the most amazing pictures of Shenzhen we have seen.  We now use Jesse as a benchmark for our own photos, and occasionally curse his excellence.  (Posted October 26, 2005)

  • KANIGMA.ORG Recommended by the above-mentioned Jesse, this page has writings and photos about Shenzhen.   (Posted October 26, 2005)

  • Taschenrechner.us: Good, straightforward observations by a Chinese-speaking American in Shenzhen and greater Guangdong.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Bring on the Night: "Going from Denmark to China for the first time ever, and the time after."  A Dane on a quest for love writes an apres-blog with the benefit of hindsight. Sporadically posted but way cool.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Me me me... (in China): " Indian's experiences working in China."  The site seems defunct, and the author left Shenzhen in mid-2004.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • TimKelley.net: " American TEFL teaching experiences." Jesse says Tim has returned to America; I can only find one picture at a time there.   (Updated October 26, 2005) August 31, 2005)

  • The Barefoot Fool: My old blog, from my first half-year in China.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

Websites: Here are websites dedicated to English information about living in Shenzhen and the surrounding areas.

  • Shenzhen Party (.com): I was reading this site before I ever moved to Shenzhen, to get a sense of the place.  It remains Shenzhen's Number One listings, and is in many ways Shenzhen's expat "face" to the world.   (Posted August 30, 2005)

  • Shenzhen Government Online: The English top page leads to tons of information on government agencies and services, as well as "booster" information on Shenzhen's history and geography.  Don't miss the list of issues of the "Government Gazette" which contains notices of new laws and other documents recently released.  There's also a list of E-mail addresses for government officers (though it's not clear which officer is in charge of what), and a (pretty useless) map of Shenzhen.  And for sheer enjoyment, there's an extremely random list of restaurants that includes one named "Shantian Fish Head & Wild Mushroom," and the "Shenzhen Tongjufu Medicine Meal Restaurant" which features the mysterious "Chinese Medicine cuisine."   (Posted August 10, 2005)

  • Shenzhen Window: These pages and those of Shenzhen Government Online are often indistinguishable from each other.   (Posted August 30, 2005)

  • Shenzhen.net: The "Web Site Directory" on the lower part of the page is mostly filled with ads, but the top five buttons (How to Get there   Where to Sleep   Where to Eat   Explore Shenzhen   Everything Else) lead to some useful information.   (Posted August 30, 2005)

  • VirtualTourist.com (residents): Here's a list of Shenzhen-based members (about 35 at this writing), and another Shenzhen list of 24.  They also list about 1350 members in Hong Kong, 130 in Guangzhou, and 6 in Dongguan!   (Posted August 10, 2005)

  • VirtualTourist.com (visitors): That's the list of members living in those places.  For accounts of visits at VT , see Shenzhen (35), another list of Shenzhen (314), Hong Kong (10760+), Guangzhou (965), and Dongguan (21).   (Posted August 10, 2005)

  • Shenzhen Fever: A small commercial site that still isn't really off the ground after four months of operation.  (Posted July 7, 2006)

  • Shenzhen Expat: We list this as a courtesy, but it really hasn't reached its full potential.   (Posted August 30, 2005)

  • Touristic blurbs:

  • YPHH Happy Networking: - YPHH organizes Happy Networking Events in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, China;  they also operate a website with plenty of links and other Shenzhen information.

Newsletters: A number of websites offer newsletters to bring Shenzhen (and surrounding area) information directly to your Inbox.  Here are a few:

  • The Laughing Buddha Weekly: Our sister page hosts a lot of activities in Shenzhen.  The newsletter contains news of those events and tips for expats.   (Posted August 30, 2005)

  • Shenzhen Party: In addition to their fine listings pages, they also publish this useful newsletter.   (Posted August 30, 2005)

  • Xianzai Guangdong: This page has a list of "Xianzai" newsletters.  Although the one you want is named "Xianzai Guangdong," it contains solid listings for Shenzhen (sample and back issues are here).  Just click "Xianzai Guangdong," enter your e-mail below, and click "Subscribe."  While you're there, you may want to subscribe to some of their other newsletters.  I take Emergency Chinese, China Trivia, Chinese Idioms, and Chinese Recipes.  Unfortunately, they only archive one sample of these, so you'll have to subscribe if you want to build a "library."   (Posted August 30, 2005)

Classifieds: LIFESiZE is not attempting to run its own classified section.  Rather, we have gathered here the known classified listings available at other sites.

  • Shenzhen Party (.com): The mother of all Shenzhen classifieds.  Note especially their jobs section.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • InShenzhen: The German community's homepage has ads better termed "unclassified."  But it's a lively page nonetheless.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Shenzhen People (.net): Sam and Leon's small but hopeful pages could be better utilized by the advertising public.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Shenzhen Daily: The HTML edition used to list a link to their classifieds in the left-hand sidebar; It's not there at this writing, but could return.  In any case, the listings (when they're there) are few.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Shenzhen Fever: A new and fairly small classifieds section at the Shenzhen Fever site.  (Posted July 7, 2006)

Calendars: Several sites provide events listings for Shenzhen and surrounding areas.  Here are some of them:

  • Shenzhen Party (.com): In this as in many areas, Shenzhen Party leads the pack in on-line resources.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Shenzhen Daily: The Entertainment or Leisure Highlights pages contain a wealth of listings for venues and events.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • InShenzhen: These listings often reflect those on the Shenzhen Party site, but occasionally a unique event is listed.   (Posted August 31, 2005)

  • Virtual Tourist: Actually, nothing was listed here at this writing, but it's a viable resource for those looking to announce events.  (As soon as I have time, The Laughing Buddha's listings will be there!)   (Posted August 31, 2005)
