Green community: THREE Shenzhen communities, Overseas Chinese Town (OCT), Yitian village and Meilin village, were named national model green communities Friday....

Expatriate clubs springing up in Shenzhen: Discusses various social clubs for expats in Shenzhen, including Snakepit and the Shekou Women's International Club, both in Shekou; the German Community and their website (www.inshenzhen.com); and the ubiquitous Shenzhen Party (www.shenzhenparty.com).  The article also included this passage:

While in the past most expats' clubs were in Shekou, they have started appearing in Futian District, where an increasing number of foreigners are living.

The Laughing Buddha is one of them. Established by James Baquet, a teacher with the Shenzhen Polytechnic, it mainly organizes activities in Futian District, including excursions, dinners and parties.

"When a foreigner comes to the city, he or she is entering an atmosphere totally strange to him. So we are trying to help new comers through introducing friends to them and providing useful information," said James.

13,910 relics handed over to Guangdong government: SHENZHEN Customs handed over 13,910 cultural relics it confiscated before May 31, 2004 to the Guangdong Provincial Culture Department on Monday.... 

China tightens net control: PORNOGRAPHIC web sites, or news sites that publish stories containing fabricated information will be severe punished or even shut down under a new regulation, the China Daily reported Monday.  ... City leaders urged to improve public signs: The Translators Association of Shenzhen (TAS) revealed that it would submit a proposal to top city leaders on improving the English language used in public signs at a seminar Tuesday.

Orchestra musician hopes, dreams, and waits: ONE of the 20 expatriate musicians at present with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Maxim Novikov, as a viola player from Moscow, has been here since December 1998. He said his life here was not very special but "he hopes and waits."  Includes mention of two other musicians, Dima Gagulidze, a 27-year-old double bass player from Georgia, and Zurab Shersheriya, a violinist from Russia.

Environmental protection urgent for SZ: experts: SHENZHEN needs to improve its ecological system to gain a competitive edge over other cities, environmental protection experts told a seminar Monday.

Metro intervals shortened: THE interval between peak-hour trains on Shenzhen Metro Line 1 has been shortened from eight minutes to six starting Wednesday as three new trains begin plying.

A note in the PDF edition states "Shenzhen Daily will be suspended from Oct. 3 to 9 during the National Day holidays. Publication will resume Oct. 10...."

Typhoon Longwang likely to disturb golden week: Typhoon Longwang, the 19th typhoon this year, was expected to bring wind and rains to the city in the middle of the golden week, the city observatory said.

Expats dug deep to help sick boy: BRITON Ken Taylor handed over 70,000 yuan (US$8,642) to his subordinate engineer Chen Dongying to pay for the medical treatment of her 2-year-old son who is currently battling against cancer.  The money was raised from a charity dinner held in five restaurants in Shekou on Sept. 22.

Chinese corner a big draw: While many Chinese turn to English corners to brush up their English speaking skills, the Chinese corner is becoming increasingly popular among international students at Shenzhen University.  Some 180 students attended Wednesday’s Chinese corner...expats from outside the university are welcome to the Chinese corner, which is held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Wednesday at the International Students’ Dormitory, free of charge.
