Welcome to the "Survival Kit" for Shenzhen Expats!

INTROINTROINTRO

Each heading below offers links to off-site resources or entries in the LIFESiZE blog.  More Shenzhen information can be found by checking the LIFESiZE Homepage.  If you are a regular visitor to LIFESiZE, your best bet is just to check the blog occasionally.

Movies: If you REALLY want to spend as much as 80 RMB on a movie (but early shows can be much cheaper), here's a list of theaters.  We recommend the much cheaper DVD route!

Golden Harvest Cinema      New South Cinema

Golden Harvest Cinema is located in the Mixc shopping center at Shennan and Bao'an Roads.

Read the film posters carefully to determine the Chinese title of the film you wish to see.  If you can't make it out, click the poster then look at the top item in the list, labeled "影片名称."

Now go back to the top page.

Click

which is in this tab

near the top of the page.  Film titles are listed in Chinese, with times.

This cinema tells you the films' language in two places.

One is on the same page you went to see the film's title (see above); the fourth item, labeled "影片语言," is the language.

The other is next to the film's title on the page that lists the times:

All you really hope to see is "英文" meaning English (YingWen).  Far more common is 国语" meaning Chinese (ZhongYu).

The New South Cinema complex is located in the Jusco shopping center, just east of the Ke Xue Guan Metro Station on Shennan Boulevard.  After accessing the page, pull down the little window

near the center of the page and select a date.  Movie titles are listed in Chinese, but clicking on them brings up a copy of the film's poster.  Language is given in the "Language" column of the listing.  All you really hope to see is "英语" meaning English (Ying国语" meaning Chinese (ZhongYu).

Night Life: There plenty of bars and other nightspots in Shenzhen.  Listings can be found under Restaurants and Bars & Clubs on the Hospitality page.

Amusement Parks: Shenzhen prides itself on its theme parks.  See here for parks with a cultural theme; but this one is strictly for thrills:

Happy Valley (sometimes called "Happy Kingdom").  If you ask me, the minibuses in Shenzhen are thrilling enough!
