Museums

Welcome to the "Survival Kit" for Shenzhen Expats!

This page is an extension of the Museum category on the Culture page.  You may find further information there, or on the LIFESiZE blog.

By the way, this bilingual page  seems to have fairly current listings for happenings at many of the museums listed here, and features maps (Chinese only) as well.

Metro: Shao Nian Gong Station Exit B (少年宫站B出口)
Comments: I’ve been to this one! It can easily be walked to from Shao Nian Gong Station at the north end of Metro Line 4. It’s on the north side of Hong Li Road, near the gate to Lian Hua Shan Park, which is across from the Children’s Palace. I saw a temporary exhibit of art by students, alumni, and teachers  from a Russian art institute—pretty pedestrian. Upstairs was the “permanent” collection by the artist Guan Shanyue, mostly showing happy workers.

I must admit to being a bit confused by the opening line on the “official” English homepage

Features as a national public organization without benefit of cultural cause, Guan Shanyue Art Museum mainly focuses on collecting, studying, displaying and popularizing art works of Mr. Guan Shanyue and other works from temporary artists, studying and searching out the development indication of current and modern art of China and foreign countries in the meanwhile.

“Without benefit of cultural cause”? At least the homepage has a good map.

Anyway, Mr. Guan (still alive?) was born in 1912 in Guangdong, and spent most of his life as a teacher—although this bio says that in 1949 he “participated actively in revolutionary art activities.”

"Ancient Shenzhen", "Recent Shenzhen", "Shenzhen Today" plus several series in "Contemporary Masters of Painting and Calligraphy", "Guizhou Folk Festivals and Culture", etc.. In addition, the museum put on various displays of items every year on culture relics, history, science and technology, culture, and art.

He Xiangning Art Gallery (何香凝美术馆)

Buses: 26, 101, 105, 113, 204
Metro: Hua Qiao Cheng Station (华侨城站)
Comments: This gallery also operates the OCT Contemporary Art Centre across the street.  This page says of the artist:

He Xiangning and her husband Liao Zhongkai were both close comrades of Dr Sun Yat-sen. Also a good friend of many top Chinese leaders of New China such as Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, she served as chairwoman of the Chinese Artists' Association and was one of the seven modern Chinese artists whose precious works are restricted from export out of China.

Again, art and politics make strange bedfellows in China.

Comments: This museum is part of the Tian Hou Temple complex in Chiwan, which I have written about extensively, starting here.  You can also see pictures of friends seated in the museum on the A Day in Chiwan page; I've heard that those chairs are from the ship anchored at "Sea World" (Hai Shang Shi Jie) in Shekou.

Yantian District

Zhong-Ying Street Historical Museum (中英街历史博物馆)
Address: 9 Huancheng Road, Sha Tou Jiao, Yantian District (盐田区沙头角镇内环城路口9)
Phone: (0755) 2525-1104

Hours: Daily 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (closed Monday)
Tickets: 10 yuan
Buses: 202, 205
Metro: There is no Metro in Yantian (yet)
Comments: Zhong-[for Zhongguo, "China"] Ying [for Yingguo, "England"] Street is part of the boundary between the PRC and Hong Kong.  In days past, it was also an easy place for refugees to slip across the border.  Now a tourist attraction, it boasts this museum, where (according to the homepage) "the alarm bell exhibited on the museum square always warns us that we should keep the humiliat[ing] history of Zhong-Ying Street in mind."  That is, the humiliation of losing Hong Kong to the British.  But now the museum is a "municipal patriotic education base" which documents the "One Street, Two System" arrangement, "which is unique in China and even peculiar in the world."

The SZWen site includes this note: “Do remember to apply for a passport from the local public security department.” I suspect this is for Chinese only?  I'm really not sure what this means.

Comments: The Museum is itself an old Hakka house compound, which I have written about starting here.  I wrote more on the Hakka houses in Longgang, beginning here.  This is quite an excursion, but well worth the trip.

Dong Jiang Army Museum (东江纵队纪念馆)
Address: Shihuipi Village Dongzhong Road, Pingshan Town, Longgang District (龙岗区坪山镇东纵路石灰陂村)
Phone: (0755) 8464-2252
Homepage: Unknown
Hours: Daily 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Tickets: Free
Buses: 365, 818
Metro: There is no Metro in Longgang (yet)
Comments: The "DongJiang Guerilla Force" is often mentioned in the pages of the Shenzhen Daily, especially in the summer of 2005, which the Guan Shanyue Museum called a "Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan."   This site chronicles the garrison's activities in Sai Kung, Hong Kong; otherwise I'm not having much luck finding anything about them online.  There was one brief blurb about the Longgang museum  on this site, though:

Dongjiang Military Command Site
The command centre was built in 1912, originally as an Italian-styled church, and became the headquarters of Dongjiang Column during 1944 to 1945. The patriotism education base designated by Guangdong Provincial Government showcases the life and struggle of the revolutionaries.

I'll be checking this out in the near future, and will have more to say then.

Dafen Oil-Painting Village (大芬油画村)
Address: Shen Hui Road, Bu Ji Street, Longgang District (龙岗区深惠路布吉大芬立交桥东南侧)
Phone: (0755) 8473-2622
Homepage: The "McDonald's of oil painting" is well covered on the net:
Hours: All day, Every day
Tickets: None
Buses: 512, 863, 616, 537, 315, 66
Metro: Far from the Metro
Comments: OK, this is more of a shopping place than a museum.  But it's full of art.  The gallery to the left of the main gate has an especially good collection (on the second floor) of original art.
